TThis seems to be the current state of the transmitter building sometime in February 2024. Felix would be apoplectic. Thanks to Michael Lovejoy on Facebook.
Dear visitor, I know I haven't been here in quite a while. What with work, health concerns, life in general and lack of time, I have been negligent with the blog. I haven't gotten any contributions from anywhere, it all seems to be going to a like page on Facebook...but that's partly my fault, too, I haven't had time to scour the world-wide web. I am gearing up to try and get "back in the game".
Thanks go to Dave S. for continuing to maintain this tribute blog, and to Barry Mac for continuing to donate his time and programs. Barry was able to get a treasure trove of recordings from the old transmitter site before it all got dumped into oblivion, and has done a fantastic job of downloading the audio and sharing it here.
Looks like since most of the material is being placed at Facebook, I will be gleaning stuff from there as well, and I think I'll be able to place a link here on the blog that will lead you to more audio than ever before!
With that, here I go...I will do my best to catch up!
Best regards,
Bud S. (staceys4@hotmail.com)
Nancy (daughter of Felix McDonald) contacted me previously about a picture she had somewhere, and she found it! Her message, via Facebook:"

so here it is. My husband David is on top left side in red cap, Demp
Dempsey in black hat, __________? (one of the Garretts, _______?,

Bottom roll: ______?, Bill Mitchell, George Moore, _________? Maybe someone can help out with the names I have forgotten…….."

Thanks to Bud S. for finding these!
Found this also on Facebook, kudos go to Doug Virden. Not sure what the award is, I can't expand the picture without blurring the text... anyone know?
Thanks, Doug!

Gleaned from Barry Mac's KAAY photo album and posted on Facebook, is a "mystery picture", with some explanation.
In Barry's words: "Okay, I have NO idea who any of these people are, or WHERE this is. But the picture was in the KAAY photo album, and I'm pretty sure it has more to do with the old KQ94 than it does KAAY, circa 1980."
Comments:
Another old aircheck of KAAY and Beaker Street has surfaced.
This new one comes from James England of Boulder, Colorado, who emailed us about a cassette tape he found. It was recorded in February 1974 off the KAAY skywave in eastern Kansas, with a steady signal. Beaker Street was airing a documentary on Bob Dylan with a KAAY ID in the middle. I wasn’t aware that Beaker Street aired any artist documentaries, but here is one! James provided this background on the aircheck:
“I started listening to Beaker Street around 1972, when I was living in Pratt, Kansas, attending Pratt Junior College. I stumbled on the AM signal on my '65 GTO car-radio, probably driving around after the local bar's midnight closing. Needless to say, there wasn't any comparable music programming in that part of the country then (sorry, KOMA), and I was hooked.
Apparently, I made the recording, probably in the early part of 1974, while living in Topeka. I have no memory of how (probably with a portable recorder's external mic right from a radio speaker) or why I recorded it, and don't remember even listening to it ever.
In cleaning out the garage I came upon a small stash of old cassettes; this one was labelled only "Bob Dylan" and I had assumed it was just a tape of one of his records. I had decided to throw it out, but figured I should at listen first to all the old tapes, and after purchasing a portable player (having long since retired the better-quality cassette deck), I fished it out of the trash and started it up. The first thing I heard, fortunately, was the KAAY/Beaker Street ID.”
I have edited a short segment of the aircheck with a bit of the documentary, and the KAAY Beaker Street ID.
BTW, the voice on the documentary is not a KAAY DJ. It was apparently a nationally syndicated show and the voice is that of Jim Bohannon aka “Jimbo”, who later went on to become a late night talkshow host on the Mutual Broadcasting System, replacing Larry King. I confirmed this is Jimbo’s voice with people who worked with him at Mutual.
Here at the Mighty 1090 Blog, we await still more discoveries of KAAY airchecks tucked away in more basements.

Barry Mac has successfully relocated his recording equipment and has heroically assembled this weekend's episodes of Tin Can Alley and Flashback Tracks. Thanks, Barry, and good luck with all to come!
One casualty of last Friday's devastating tornado in Little Rock are our Flashback Tracks and Tin Can Alley shows. The shows' creator, Barry Mac, had some damage to his home that makes it unlivable at the moment. Barry is in the process of assessing the damage and relocating but his weekly shows are on hold.
We wish Barry all the best during these challenging times!
I just ran across Drew and Russell on Facebook! Drew said we could link to his site and Russell has committed to sending me an e-mail regarding his tenure at KAAY!

I hope to have more "Russell material" soon! We'd shared some info here before, but are always looking for more!

Always good to hear from Doug Virden, he gets little tidbits and such to share with us:
"Sixty years ago in September KTHS became KAAY. It started off with the air personalities reading the Little Rock phone book cover to cover with the Baby Elephant Walk playing in the background. A short time later the Cuban Missile Crisis took place and the people of Cuba relied on KAAY to get information. It has been stated that the KAAY signal was the only one Fidel Castro couldn’t jam. Tom Bigby (Buddy Carr) stated he was kicked out of the studio by a Government official so they could broadcast Voice of America.
Fast forward sixty years, earlier this year we learned the powerful signal will not return. Talked to someone currently working there and said KAAY was in very bad shape. Checked the program schedule recently and there are only 16 ministries left on the station. I don’t know how KAAY can afford to stay on the air. The other directional tower may end up being used as a cell phone tower."

Barry McCorkindale posted this up on the Facebook page, "KAAY-AM The Mighty 1090": "Well, it was in the KAAY '60s photo album. Anybody got any idea who this feller is?" Dale Seidenschwarz/Clyde Clifford replied: "Richard Weithan (sp?) Buddy Karr. He died in a jeep accident at summer camp. He was GOOD."
I don't think we've ever seen a good picture of him. If I remember correctly, KAAY retired the air name "Buddy Karr" after Richard died.
Thanks, Barry Mac!

Posted by Chris McGaha on the KAAY-AM The Mighty 1090 Facebook page:
"This is me operating the Portable Party Machine in a mail car on the Hog Train on the way to the Sugar Bowl when the Hogs played Alabama. We were the only system that could operate on a moving train car because the system used old cart machines instead of turntables. I designed the t-shirt and sold them at our shows. The rest of the car was full of drunk and high people dancing. Part of my pay was admission to the Super Dome for the game. I had sea legs so bad from standing up in that moving car all night I couldn't hardly walk."
Mark Larsen mentioned that is Terry Caldwell behind Chris.
Betcha that was a wild time! Thanks, Chris!

"Ray Lincoln .. great Friend & DJ .. Met him when he came to work at KLAZ .. I was working at KAAY when Ray was there."
Some great stories about Ray and Ram, both here and at A.J. Lindsey's blog, as well. Thanks, Sheilia!

I remember this story being posted on A. Lindsey's previous KAAY Blog and the discussions we've mentioned...and here is the newspaper clipping, courtesy of Tim Brown on the KAAY-AM The Mighty 1090 Facebook page. He dated it 7/7/65.
In April 2012, I was in Little Rock...I think it was Charlie Scarbrough who was taxi'ing me around on this particular day, showing me a bunch of stuff, and we drove past Howard Watson's son's home, where Howard was living at the time. Charlie told me that Howard was in very poor health. I stated that it would have been neat to meet him, if he were doing better, but we decided not to make a "cold call" and respect their privacy.
Howard Watson, "The Weird Beard", RIP.

I have a floor radio very, very similar to this. Neat display! I wonder if they're piping music through it, but it doesn't appear to be lit up. Just a nice, big, wide-range speaker behind it, firing forward, emitting music from some source, would be nice!
Gleaned again from the KAAY-AM The Mighty 1090 Facebook page...they don't say where this is....

Doug Virden posted this on the KAAY-AM The Mighty 1090 Facebook page. Note the price!
His comments: "Saw this on a wall at a flea market. Never have seen a beat New Mexico State poster."
And Steven Cook commented, " At $225, I'll never see one again!"
Thanks, Doug!

I can't remember if I posted this, so here it is...forgive me if it's a repeat. Gleaned from the KAAY-AM The Mighty 1090 Facebook page, by Doug Virden. His comments:
"The song @ #25 is Jesus Was a Capricorn by Kris Kristofferson. Those were the most tabulated songs of the week. Doesn't have a date on it, I'm guessing it is sometime in November."
Thanks, Doug!

Yep, the old 1969 GMC 1500 pickup truck I had has a new home. I only taped this bumper sticker on it, for effect, so I wouldn't ruin the sticker. The KAAY-AM The Mighty 1090 has been using this picture as their header for a long time.
I just didn't have the time, energy, drive, nor MONEY to throw into restoring it. A neighbor bought it for his grandson. The neighbor used to do body work and build racers. With the little 1965 283 V8 in it, I'm sure they'll have fun. That engine would 'chirp' the big, wide 60-series tires I had on the drive axle!
To be sure, I got a newer truck at a great deal. I'm much more comfy now, thanks. I may even put a KAAY bumper sticker in the window....

This picture recently popped up on the KAAY-AM The Mighty 1090 Facebook page. Barry McCorkindale put the question out there, "who was this? Dale Seidenschwarz knew:
"Robert 'Bo' Marshall. He was Win Paul Rockefeller's security man."
Robert Lusk also mentioned, "...also a former LRPD public information sergeant."
Thanks to Barry Mac, Robert Lusk and Clyde Clifford! Keep 'em comin'!
